This is my sixth year to participate in this popular art event and my studio will be open on Saturday, June 28 from 10:00 to 3:30 and Sunday, June 29, noon to 5:00. To start the weekend off right, there is an opening reception for the gallery exhibition part of the event, at the Upstairs Artspace on Friday evening, June 27, from 5 to 7:30. The gallery exhibit will showcase a representative piece of art from each of the participating 24 local artists, so please come out for that if you can manage...the openings are always fun! This year for the first time, there is a corresponding silent auction of many of the artists' works, so there will be bargains to be had! On Saturday morning at 9 am and Sunday morning at 11 am you are invited to enjoy coffee and refreshments at Upstairs Artspace, where you will be able to get maps and helpful tips, before visiting the artists' studios. My studio is still at 175 Glenwalden Lane, Tryon, NC, but only the studio itself will be open this year, not the whole house. Don't worry, there will be signs. I will have artworks for sale, but please don't ever feel obligated to make a purchase. I'd just like to open the studio to you for a visit. An Art Trek map may be viewed and printed at www.upstairsartspace.org by clicking on the Art Trek link at the top of the page. *Please note, I also have a solo exhibit with an opening reception at the Pickens County Museum of Art on Saturday night (see card below). There are 32 pieces of my most recent works in that show and you are more than welcome to join us there. In order to make it to that opening reception on time I will need to leave my studio early on Saturday...say around 3:30. Michael Brodeur (Furman University Head of the Art Department) is having a corresponding solo show in the second gallery and we will share the reception area that night. http://www.keithspencer.net/news.php?key=443&id=1 keith@keithspencer.netFri, 27 Jun 2014 Skyuka Fine Art "Keith Spencer - Grounded in Color" Keith Spencer’s newest body of work immerses the viewer in an unexpected and refreshing experience of color. Spencer has a bold brush stroke and when combined with his expressive color choices, it produces a veritable visual feast for the eyes. In his new show “Grounded in Color” intense local color as well as abstractions of those colors are abundant and they seem to calmly take you by the hand into their mesmerizing space. Spencer’s creative license is daring and gutsy with results that are full of life and energy. “A big part of the creative process for me is continuing to grow and experiment. This latest body of work is very much in that vein. Using mainly local landscapes as inspiration and subject matter, many of these paintings are the result of asking myself ‘What if I try…’ The unifying concept in my work is an effort to present the viewer with a sense of the feeling of a place. Why does Tryon feel different than Saluda? They are both small mountain towns, but I think most people would agree they feel different. Rather than rendering the details of the elements in a landscape, I try to reduce it to elemental shapes and colors. In that way the work becomes as much about the paint as the subject,” Spencer says. Spencer’s highly collected paintings can be found in galleries throughout the United States and Europe. He has been described as “both an expressive painter and a true colorist” by William Kortlander, Professor of Art at Ohio State University. His landscapes are frequently done in the alla prima tradition (one sitting) and feature North Carolina and South Carolina and specifically Tryon, where he now lives. He is included in the book by Edward Emory and Stephen Stinson called “Artists Among Us – 100 Faces of Art in Spartanburg” available at Barnes and Noble. “Keith Spencer-Grounded in Color” opens at Skyuka Fine Art on May 23 with a reception from 5 – 8 p.m. The show runs through the end of June. The exhibit will run through October 28 and will include an Opening Reception on Oct. 4th at 5 p.m. that will begin with a short conversation with the artist about the show. The exhibit will feature 20 paintings by this well established artist, who is currently represented by 6 galleries in 5 states. William Kortlander, Professor of Art, Ohio State University, said “Keith's work really is very strong. He is both an expressive painter and a true colorist.” During a group exhibit at the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, in which they both participated, Carl Blair, owner Hampton III Gallery and one of South Carolina's most accomplished living artists brought Keith’s work to the attention of the crowd and said, “Keith Spencer...is an exceptional painter. His work is strong...very strong.” The title of the upcoming exhibit is “Solace”, and comes from the Old French ‘solas’ and from the Latin sōlācium "consolation", meaning comfort or consolation in a time of distress. “After moving to a very wooded area near Tryon in 2007, I began working with compositions that were based on the vertical lines and background colors of the wooded landscapes around me. The paintings in this exhibit reflect the place I wanted to be at this point in my life. They are an honest amalgam of simple images and the emotions they elicit...whether primally or intuitively. I’m not sure “solace” can be a permanent state of being, but I’ve learned to notice those moments and enjoy them when they do occur. Maybe we all need a little more solace in our lives.” http://www.keithspencer.net/news.php?key=432&id=1 keith@keithspencer.netFri, 5 Oct 2012 "Awake with Drake" early morning vist with artist Keith SpencerThis morning at 7:15 am Bill Drake of WORL FM 103.3 did a 10 minute phone interview with artist Keith Spencer about his upcoming exhibit at the Chapman Cultural Center Guild Gallery. "Upstairs Artspace celebrate horses in new exhibit opening Fri., Apr 16" "Equine Expressions" opens this Friday at the Upstairs Artspace to coincide with the Block House Steeple Chase. A public reception will be held "race" Saturday, April 17, from 5 to 8 PM. This is the first time the Upstairs has undertaken an exhibit that's all about the horse; or brought together many Carolina artists who are inspired by this magnificent animal. Mase Lucas, Teri Pena and keith Spencer own horses. Perhaps that's why their large and gorgeous paintings communicate so much knowledge and personal intimacy. Spencer is a bold colorist who place his horses in different seasonal landscapes. Lucas and Pena work predominantly with natural earth tones; their horses fill out the canvas with forceful realism. Teresa Prater uses pigmented wax in the encaustic process to execute small horse paintings, including portraits. Phil Garrett's more abstract style uses color-drenched equine shapes in paintings and monoprints. Ruth Apter and Jim Whalen collaborate on decorative ceramic vessels covered with horses in motion, while Apter has sculpted fetish-like horses. Each of these artists is a well established and respected professional, exhibiting frequently in fine Southeastern galleries and being chosen for public and private collections. Most have shown before at the Upstairs. "Equine Expressions" continues through May 29, along with a second exhibit, "Seduction; Layered Interpretations." Mase Lucas, Teri Pena and keith Spencer own horses. "Equine Expressions" continues through May 29, along with a second exhibit, "Seduction; Layered Interpretations." A Walk & Talk" tour of both exhibits conducted by artists is Sunday, April 25, at 2PM Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm. On Saturday, Barnet Park will be filled with international food and culture as well as an array of art lining the fence as part of the Sidewalk Art Show. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with registration for artists wishing to compete in the juried art show. Registration fees are $25 for professional and $20 for amateur. Artists in both of these categories may enter up to four pieces if they're members of the Spartanburg Museum of Art; non-members are limited to entering two works. Those in the student category may enter four pieces free of charge. More than $7,000 in prizes will be awarded. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: textile art, painting and pastels, drawing and graphics, photography, open media, sculpture and ceramics. The artwork will line the fence that skirts Barnet Park. All of the student artwork will be displayed on the outside of the fence, and the inside will be lined with the amateur and professional categories. While viewing the submissions, you can enjoy food and entertainment from the International Festival, which is just inside the fence of the park. While parents enjoy the art, children can either take a free art lesson, make a mural with sidewalk chalk or create their own paintings. Children can also visit the Kid's Zone in the International Festival to make souvenirs from around the world. Vendors and artist demonstrators will line the inside of the fence. The Sidewalk Art Show will feature Ken Turk and his hand-blown glass, Shane Bryant's ceramics, Clint Button's clay sculpture as well as the artists-in-residence from Hub-Bub. The Sidewalk Art Show will also feature artists from around the world who now reside in the Upstate. The awards ceremony for the Sidewalk Art Show will take place at 5 p.m. Judges include Sandy Rupp from the Hampton III Gallery and Sherry Masters from the Grovewood Gallery. Rupp and Masters will judge the professional and amateur categories. The student category will be judged by Keith Spencer, a full-time artist. Sidewalk Art Show coordinator Nathan Galloway explains, "for those just starting to wade into art, whether as an artist themselves or just to view it, the Sidewalk Art Show is a great opportunity." The teaming up of the International Festival and the Sidewalk Art Show worked out well last year with a combined attendance of 7,500. Galloway expects a crowd of up to 10,000 this year. He believes it's due to the local talent. "There's such a rich and vibrant arts community in Spartanburg and this is a really wonderful opportunity to see it," he said. Both the Sidewalk Art Show and the International Festival are free of charge from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Public restrooms will be available at Barnet Park. In case of rain, the Sidewalk Art Show will take place at The Arts Center at 385 S. Spring St. For more information, call Galloway at (864) 582-7616. This story appeared in print on page C5 Buzz up!
