"Upstairs Artspace celebrate horses in new exhibit opening Fri., Apr 16" "Equine Expressions" opens this Friday at the Upstairs Artspace to coincide with the Block House Steeple Chase. A public reception will be held "race" Saturday, April 17, from 5 to 8 PM. This is the first time the Upstairs has undertaken an exhibit that's all about the horse; or brought together many Carolina artists who are inspired by this magnificent animal. Mase Lucas, Teri Pena and keith Spencer own horses. Perhaps that's why their large and gorgeous paintings communicate so much knowledge and personal intimacy. Spencer is a bold colorist who place his horses in different seasonal landscapes. Lucas and Pena work predominantly with natural earth tones; their horses fill out the canvas with forceful realism. Teresa Prater uses pigmented wax in the encaustic process to execute small horse paintings, including portraits. Phil Garrett's more abstract style uses color-drenched equine shapes in paintings and monoprints. Ruth Apter and Jim Whalen collaborate on decorative ceramic vessels covered with horses in motion, while Apter has sculpted fetish-like horses. Each of these artists is a well established and respected professional, exhibiting frequently in fine Southeastern galleries and being chosen for public and private collections. Most have shown before at the Upstairs. "Equine Expressions" continues through May 29, along with a second exhibit, "Seduction; Layered Interpretations." On Saturday, Barnet Park will be filled with international food and culture as well as an array of art lining the fence as part of the Sidewalk Art Show. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with registration for artists wishing to compete in the juried art show. Registration fees are $25 for professional and $20 for amateur. Artists in both of these categories may enter up to four pieces if they're members of the Spartanburg Museum of Art; non-members are limited to entering two works. Those in the student category may enter four pieces free of charge. More than $7,000 in prizes will be awarded. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: textile art, painting and pastels, drawing and graphics, photography, open media, sculpture and ceramics. The artwork will line the fence that skirts Barnet Park. All of the student artwork will be displayed on the outside of the fence, and the inside will be lined with the amateur and professional categories. While viewing the submissions, you can enjoy food and entertainment from the International Festival, which is just inside the fence of the park. While parents enjoy the art, children can either take a free art lesson, make a mural with sidewalk chalk or create their own paintings. Children can also visit the Kid's Zone in the International Festival to make souvenirs from around the world. Vendors and artist demonstrators will line the inside of the fence. The Sidewalk Art Show will feature Ken Turk and his hand-blown glass, Shane Bryant's ceramics, Clint Button's clay sculpture as well as the artists-in-residence from Hub-Bub. The Sidewalk Art Show will also feature artists from around the world who now reside in the Upstate. The awards ceremony for the Sidewalk Art Show will take place at 5 p.m. Judges include Sandy Rupp from the Hampton III Gallery and Sherry Masters from the Grovewood Gallery. Rupp and Masters will judge the professional and amateur categories. The student category will be judged by Keith Spencer, a full-time artist. Sidewalk Art Show coordinator Nathan Galloway explains, "for those just starting to wade into art, whether as an artist themselves or just to view it, the Sidewalk Art Show is a great opportunity." The teaming up of the International Festival and the Sidewalk Art Show worked out well last year with a combined attendance of 7,500. Galloway expects a crowd of up to 10,000 this year. He believes it's due to the local talent. "There's such a rich and vibrant arts community in Spartanburg and this is a really wonderful opportunity to see it," he said. Both the Sidewalk Art Show and the International Festival are free of charge from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Public restrooms will be available at Barnet Park. In case of rain, the Sidewalk Art Show will take place at The Arts Center at 385 S. Spring St. For more information, call Galloway at (864) 582-7616. This story appeared in print on page C5 Buzz up!
